tread analysis Grading Charts

Grading in inches
Tread Depth
Tread Depth Grade and Performance Characteristics
>6/32
Tread has optimal characteristics
5/32
Tread has marginal handling, diminished wet traction, limited snow
and ice traction.

Action: Use with caution in winter driving conditions. Drive carefully.
4/32
Low tread has poor acceleration and snow/ice traction.
Wet/dry braking is diminished.

Action: Tire replacement is recommended for winter driving conditions.
3/32
Tread has little or no snow/ice traction. Wet/dry braking is poor with loss of control at highway speeds. Stopping distances are greatly increased.
Action: Seriously consider tire replacement.
2.5/32
All tread properties are worn away. Tire at all speeds is at risk of losing control. Tire is dangerous - should not be driven.
Action: Replace tire immediately.

Grading in millimeters
Tread Depth
Tread Depth Grade and Performance Characteristics
>5mm
Tread has optimal characteristics
4mm
Tread has marginal handling, diminished wet traction, limited snow
and ice traction.
Action: Use with caution in winter driving conditions. Drive carefully.
3mm
Low tread has poor acceleration and snow/ice traction.
Wet/dry braking is diminished.

Action: Tire replacement is recommended for winter driving conditions.
2.5mm
Tread has little or no snow/ice traction. Wet/dry braking is poor with loss of control at highway speeds. Stopping distances are greatly increased.
Action: Seriously consider tire replacement.
2mm
All tread properties are worn away. Tire at all speeds is at risk of losing control. Tire is dangerous - should not be driven.
Action: Replace tire immediately.
